It's one of the choices for client on the CS server. Once I am comfortable with that I'll switch her macbook to smb. I'm going to get an iMac soon and set TM up for smb. The other day it was unhappy for some reason and deleted all of the old TM files and started a new one. You can transfer the files with SSL encryption but the files will be stored unencrypted in your home folder on the Diskstation. You can backup almost all of your hard drives and the data will be stored on the diskstation with up to 32 versions. I also use the NAS as the TM for my wife's macbook. I don't really feel like it it's serving it's purpose. Download and install the Cloud Station Backup application from Synologys Download Center and then follow the instructions in this section to configure the syncing service provided by Cloud Station.
This isn't very smart way of backing up and is very frustrating.

Then a couple of months later I installed windows 10 and it had to backup again. I had windows 7 and finally backed up all my files. The problem with this is it chews up a lot of disk space. I'm sick and tired of Cloud Station Backup client, it's slow, crashes and awful lot. If you still want to use Cloud Station, however, there is a very detailed official tutorial for your reference.
Synology also recommends you use this utility for file synchronization. Grew out of Cloud Station, Synology Drive inherits all its features and has better performance. Basically, CS Backup has less options and is strictly a one-way sync whereas Cloud Station Drive is the new version of Cloud Station and has a lot more options (sync multiple sub-folders to wherever you want on the NAS) with bi-directional syncing. Sync Synology NAS with client NAS or PC in real time. And it allows me to go back in time if I want to grab an older version of a file, similar to the functionality of TM. Cloud Station Backup is not a replacement for Cloud Station. Near as I can tell, it backs up only files that have changed. About once a week I fire up cloudstation client backup on my linux machine.
